The following information is a list of courses that I took during my undergraduate years at Clemson University. Each course has a short description, and some courses are provided with sample work.

Language-Oriented Instruction

CHIN1020: Elementary Chinese

A course that covers basic vocabulary. My biggest takeaway was figuring how to train myself to memorize the characters practiced and taught in class. This course used everyday words and phrases and simple sentence structures.

CHIN3050: Chinese Conversation and Composition I

The largest part of this course was the composition. I was challenged to write composition in Chinese; then, I realized composing complete and ordered thoughts in Chinese takes another mindset. Also in this course, our vocabulary greatly expands.

CHIN2010: Intermediate Chinese

This course introduced more complex sentence and grammar structures. There was also more emphasis on speaking and comprehension. In this course, I learned the sudden differences in tenses in Chinese and its translation to English.

CHIN3060: Chinese Conversation and Composition II

The largest part of this course was the composition. I was challenged to write composition in Chinese; then, I realized composing complete and ordered thoughts in Chinese takes another mindset. Also in this course, our vocabulary greatly expands.

Culture & Literature Courses

CHIN3130: Philosophy in Modern China

This course Using text selected by the professor, I explore and understand the basis of Chinese ideology. Understand the reasoning behind why one thinks what they think helps me get a glimpse of why Chinese culture is the way it is today. The contrast between Chinese ideology and Western ideology and the contrast between ideology of the modern era and present time are both highlights of this course.

CHIN4010 Pre-Modern Chinese Literature in Translation

This course allowed for the reading of beautiful literature from earlier time of Chinese history. This reflects how different and complicated literature was of that era. In addition, comparing the translations of literatures to the original, I realized that some of the beauty is lost, especially in poems. What I love about Chinese poems is the consistency of rhyme and syllables. When translated, those are sometimes lost to accurately translate the meaning.

CHIN4140 Philosophy in Medieval China

Like CHIN3110 course, this course discusses the ideologies of China but in the medieval era. Alongside the content taught regarding philosophy, history was also a part of this course. It was interesting to learn about the formation and evolution of Chinese philosophy all the way from the beginning.

CHIN4990 Selected Topics – Chinese Culture

Through the watching of selected movies and documentaries, we get pulled into the Chinese cultural setting. We discuss topics, core elements, and problems that we spot in the movies. Through class discussions and reflective essays, the values and morals of Chinese culture are compared with Western culture. This course was different because instead of learning about the forming and changing of philosophies and the philosophers of Chinese culture, it zoomed into the human scale. Therefore, we learn about Chinese culture through the lives of Chinese people.
